Following the sell out success for Billy Connolly tickets onFriday, a series of new dates have just been announced for the popularJongleurs comedy nights at Dewsbury and Huddersfield Town Halls. Comedycontinues to be a great success for the town halls, proving that Kirkleesaudiences enjoy a good laugh.

This year for the first time Jongleurs ventured intoDewsbury bringing something new to the area with its cabaret style setting andwithin no time had a regular following at the town hall. The new datesannounced for 2012 are Thursday 15 March, Thursday 10 May and Friday 19October, with all performances starting at 8pm.

Billy Connolly comes to Huddersfield Town HallWednesday 8th February 2012

Huddersfield Town Hall welcomes popular comedian Billy Connolly for one of a limited number of UK dates on his new tour.

The line up of comedians performing at Huddersfield Town Hall continues to go from strength to strength with the likes of Jimmy Carr, Dave Spikey and Sarah Millican gracing the stage. Billy is the latest top comedian to come to Huddersfield with his new show ‘The Man’ on Wednesday February 8 at 8pm.

Billy Connolly has enjoyed a longstanding career as one of the world’s best-loved comedians. His live shows have been enthralling audiences around the world for over three decades.He has toured relentlessly, beloved by audiences in the British Isles, Australia and New Zealand — all locations where he made a series of successful ‘world tour’ documentaries for the BBC.His big break was on the Parkinson show in 1975, which made him a star and led to his first UK tour: The Big Wee Tour.
His boisterous, animated physical style and off-the-cuff intensity also caught on with American audiences and he now tours the United States more regularly, becoming a familiar sight on late night talk shows.
As an actor, Connolly has revealed a dramatic side with his BAFTA-nominated performance as a confidante of Queen Victoria in Mrs. Brown, and also had memorable character roles in such diverse fare as The Last Samurai, Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events, The X-Files: I Want to Believe and Gulliver’s Travels.
He was recently back on the small screen starring in the ITV travel documentary Billy Connolly’s Route 66.

Celebrate Christmas with folk singer Kate Rusby

It might only be June but there’s a rare Christmas treat in store when contemporary folk singer and Yorkshire lass Kate Rusby performs her Christmas show at Huddersfield Town Hall on Wednesday December 14 at 7.30pm. Tickets are on sale now for her first performance at the town hall which is filled with Christmas songs, providing the perfect Christmas treat for yourself or a friend.

Kate Rusby is steeped in her local traditions and this performance will showcase the carols and songs learnt through childhood in her native South Yorkshire. She will be performing new variations of familiar carols mostly unheard outside the area.

The evening’s performance follows the release of Kate’s second album of Yorkshire-inspired songs and carols in November 2011 and Kate is touring with her band, complete with brass quintet creating a rousing Christmas celebration.

The defining voice of contemporary English folk music, Kate Rusby’s exquisite interpretations of traditional songs and finely wrought self-penned tunes have won her an audience that reaches beyond the genre. A rare achievement for a folk artist but entirely understandable given Rusby’s expressive vocals that invest whatever she sings with irresistible emotional depth.

South Yorkshire has a very strong tradition of carol singing starting early November. Sunday lunchtimes see hundreds of carollers cram into various pubs in the locality to join in the unashamedly joyous singing – standing room only! Whether you’re planning a wedding and want to gets loads of tips and ideas or you have something to offer brides and grooms to be, there’s already a buzz of anticipation for the Town Hall’s first wedding fayre.

Kirklees Town Halls are known for bringing innovative shows to entertain Kirklees residents and visitors from further afield. With everything from burlesque to comedy nights and from classical music to drama, they thought it was time to add another string to their bow and hold a wedding fayre.

Richard Batterby, Audience Management and Development Officer, for Kirklees Town Halls commented: “It’s generating a huge amount of interest from customers and suppliers and is the perfect platform to showcase this fantastic venue as an option for your Civil Ceremony. Kirklees College Fashion Students in catwalk event at Dewsbury Town Hall

Fashion students from Batley School of Art and Design will be showcasing their latest creations at a catwalk event on March 3 at Dewsbury Town Hall.

Alongside the live show, audiences will have the chance to see an exhibition of the innovation men’s tailoring designs which have won students a place in the London finals of the Golden Shears International Tailoring Competition. Students worked in collaboration with the Textile Centre of Excellence in Huddersfield and Michelsberg Tailoring in Leeds, to use their DNA traceable woven cloth to give them a unique edge.

The event has been sponsored by the Dewsbury Neighbourhoods Regeneration Programme to promote local creative talent and highlight the ongoing benefits of nurturing creative enterprise by working with the school. The event is open to the public, and tickets are now on sale at Dewsbury Town Hall priced £5 and £4 for concessions. The show starts at 7.30pm; doors open from 6.30pm.

Cllr Paul Kane, Chair of Dewsbury Regeneration Board, said: “By working together we hope to equip local young people with the skills and support to develop businesses in the area, continuing the creative economic growth in and around Dewsbury. We want to create a local vibrant fashion industry based on local students.”

Slippery Belle is brought to the Town Hall by Bella Besame who runs shows at the Lowry Theatre in Salford and until recently the Peacock Lounge in Huddersfield. Local Talent One Step Away From The 02

Catherine Hamer from Dewsbury wowed the crowd and judging panel at the Open Mic UK Regional Showcase held earlier this year at Cleckheaton Town Hall, and is now one step away from performing at the 02 in London.

Thousands of acts entered Open Mic UK 2010 and the best unsigned singers from across the country were chosen to perform at the regional live shows. Catherine performed in front of a live audience and professional judging panel. Having impressed the panel she is now set to perform at the Area Final at Dewsbury Town Hall on Saturday December 11, for a chance to progress to the National Final at the 02 in London on Wednesday January 15.

Open Mic UK is the exciting national talent competition which searches for the UK’s best singers, singer/songwriters, rappers and vocalists. It’s open to all genres and acts can perform a cover or original material.

Those who made it through the audition stage took part in a live regional head to head battle alongside the best talent in their area. Acts performed in front of hundreds of audience members and industry judges for the chance to grab a break through recording contract.

A spokesperson for Open Mic UK commented “We are searching for an act that not only has the live ability to impress an audience, industry judges and A&R associates, but an act that has the potential to become a professional recording artist. The standard was high last year and this year it has been even better. Acts that have made it through to the Area Finals will really need to give it their best performance because they could be performing at the best live music venue in the country!”

The competition is divided into age categories: under 18, 18-25 and 25 and over with all types of singers, vocal performers, groups and acoustic singer/songwriters are invited to enter Open Mic UK.

There’s over £50,000 in prizes up for grabs this year and the overall winner will be offered a recording contract, with up to £30,000 investment. They’ll also have the opportunity to tour across the UK.

There are plenty of development opportunities available to acts taking part courtesy of ICMP, who will be offering song writing courses and master classes throughout the competition. The latter stages of the competition will also provide acts with the opportunity to impress many guests from record labels, agencies and the entertainment industry as well as judges from National Radio, BBC Introducing and Regional Press.

Thousands of unsigned acts have been eagerly awaiting its return, and now the wait is almost over… auditions across the country for Live and Unsigned 2011 are coming soon with local auditions taking place at Dewsbury Town Hall on Sunday January 9, followed by the West Yorkshire heats on Saturday March 26.

Live and Unsigned is the UK’s biggest original music competition for bands, vocal groups and solo artists. Travelling across the nation, the competition searches for the ultimate and best UK unsigned act.

All acts are auditioned live in front of a judging panel, which is what makes Live and Unsigned so unique; there are no demos or recordings. All genres are encouraged to enter the competition so whether you’re into pop, RnB, punk, rock or acoustic, the competition has it all.

Those who make it through the audition stage will get to perform to industry judges, A&R associates and celebrity guests in some of the UK’s most prestigious venues. And those who make it to the Grand Final will get to share the stage with some of the UK’s best musicians at the Live and Unsigned Festival at the 02 in London!

Over 10, 000 acts entered the competition last year and the Grand Final saw the cream of the UK’s unsigned talent showcase their music in front of thousands of audience members and the judging panel which included Slade’s legendary front man Noddy Holder, Radio 1’s Annie Nightingale, Kerrang’s Alex Baker and RnB star Shola Ama.

The competition’s aim is to find potential recording artists and the overall winner is offered a comprehensive winner’s package which includes a management and recording contract, UK tour, clothing, studio time and festival slots. There are plenty of other prizes up for grabs for acts taking part including exclusive master classes with ICMP, equipment and recording time.

Your Town Halls Events Guide comes out this week and is available from all four Kirklees Town Halls: Huddersfield, Dewsbury, Cleckheaton and Batley. With details of forthcoming shows from now through to Christmas, as well as New Year highlights there’s something for everyone!

Dewsbury Town Hall highlights include the Open Mic UK Singing Competition Regional Finals on Saturday December 11; the ever popular Black Dyke Band’s Christmas concert on Friday December 17 and it wouldn’t be the festive season without Dewsbury Collegians pantomime ‘Dick Whittington’ on Tuesday January 18 to Saturday January 23.

Huddersfield Town Hall welcomes the Best of British Variety on Monday September 27; the quirky sounds of the world famous Mnozil Brass on Saturday November 6; Marc Almond’s 30th Anniversary Greatest Hits tour on Monday November 29 and popular Huddersfield Giants player Eorl Crabtree’s Gala Show on Monday November 29.

Cleckheaton Town Hall will host the Open Mic UK Singing auditions on Sunday September 12, as well as the West Yorkshire Heats on Sunday October 17. 60s fans can look forward to the Merseybeat Club Show on Saturday November 6 and the Full Monty will be coming to town from Tuesday November 23 to Saturday November 27. Batley Town Hall highlights include Guys and Dolls from Wednesday September 15 to Saturday September 18 and Beatlemania on Friday November 19. Hammonds Saltaire Band Christmas Concert will get everyone in the festive spirit on Saturday December 4.
New year highlights include the Magic of Motown who went down a storm at this year’s Festival in the Park who will be performing live at Huddersfield Town Hall on Thursday March 3. Top Abba tribute Bjorn Again will be shaking their thang on Wednesday March 9 at Huddersfield Town Hall and sure to bring happiness to our lives the legendary Ken Dodd will be performing on Sunday April 17 at Huddersfield Town Hall.

Supporting local talent Live and Unsigned, UK’s largest competition for unsigned bands and solo artists will take place on Sunday March 27, with auditions taking place from Sunday January 9.

The refurbishment of Batley Town Hall continues at a pace. The public foyers and staircases are being refurbished to a high standard and have unveiled ornate tiles which have been painted over for nearly 30 years! A new lift is also being installed to allow better access to the main hall and meeting rooms.

The live Open Mic singing competition will take place at Cleckheaton Town Hall on Sunday October 17, showcasing the best local singing talent from the West Yorkshire area. Prior to this Cleckheaton Town Hall will host the West Yorkshire Open Mic singing auditions on Sunday September 12, with successful entrants being given the opportunity to perform at the live October 17 competition. The ultimate goal is to get through to the national final which will take place in the O2 Arena in London.

Open Mic UK is an exciting new national talent competition to search for the UK’s best singers, singer/songwriters, rappers and vocalists (not bands) of all genres who perform either covers or original material. The competition offers the competitors the opportunity to perform live in front of large audiences, generating media attention and exposure.

Open Mic will be going up and down the UK to discover acts with the potential to become the next Lily Allen, Pixie Lott or Plan B! Competing for the chance to win from the £25,000 in prizes; the winning act will have the opportunity to win a recording contract to release their single.

For those who register, audition and compete they will be offered fantastic opportunities to not only develop their performance skills and personal ability, but to expose their talent – whatever genre it may be. The latter stages of the competition provide artists with the opportunity to impress judges and many guests from record labels, agencies and the entertainment industry.

The competition is divided into age categories: under 16, 16-22 and 23 and over. All types of singers, vocal performers, groups and acoustic singer/songwriters are invited to enter Open Mic UK; the competition seeks to discover an act that has the ability to become a professional recording artist.

The refurbishment of the Reception Room continues as pace. New Cabling is being fitted behind the skirting boards and a new screen is being fitted on the main wall to bring the Reception Room into the 21st Century. Change of date for Rhod Gilbert Show

Due to his new filming commitments with the BBC, popular comedian Rhod Gilbert has had to change the date for his show at Huddersfield Town Hall.

Originally planned for Sunday October 3, Huddersfield Town Hall is one of just a few venues who have managed to secure a rescheduled date and he will now be performing live on Wednesday December 8 at 7.30pm.

Current ticket holders do not need to exchange their tickets for the new date as their ticket and seat will automatically be transferred to the new date.

For those who are unable to attend on the new date and would like a refund simply contact one of the Kirklees Booking Offices (this includes all online bookings):-

For those who have not booked their tickets yet, there are still some available for sale and Kirklees Town Halls apologise for any inconvenience caused.

Strictly Stars Share the stage with Essentially Dancers

Hundreds of schoolchildren and older people took to the dance floor at Huddersfield Town Hall with Strictly’s Darren and Lilia.

Essentially Dance stars Darren and Lila

They were celebrating the end of the first year of a hugely ambitious two year programme of Latin American and ballroom dance in Kirklees delivered by Kirklees Council and NHS Kirklees in partnership with Essentially Dance.

Darren and Lilia opened each of the four sessions with a performance of Fever which received tumultuous applause from the dancers and spectators watching this unique celebration of Essentially Dance in Kirklees. Darren then invited the dancers to showcase their skills in the waltz, jive, cha cha cha and quickstep. Later in the session Lilia and Darren led a session to teach all the dancers to salsa – encouraging all to do the moves and learn the steps together.

Pupils from 23 schools attended the celebration, having learnt the dance steps in PE classes or after-school clubs.

Olivia Tetley from Headlands School in Liversedge said,”Today was really good, everything was good. Darren and Lilia were really nice and I liked the dancing.”

In the final session of the day older people from groups across Kirklees joined pupils from 7 secondary schools. Joyce Dyson and her dance partner John Brown enjoy dancing regularly at a weekly Essentially Dance class at the Galpharm Stadium. Joyce, from Newsome, said,” I thoroughly enjoyed the evening. Darren and Lilia were really good. I loved the dancing and I enjoyed watching the older people dancing with the younger ones.”

A dancer from Lindley Chimes said, “It was absolutely fabulous – when’s the next one?”

Legendary singer and British icon Marc Almond is coming to Huddersfield Town Hall to perform his 'Best Bits, Hits and A Sides' on Monday November 29 at 8pm.

Marc is touring to celebrate 30 years in the music industry, showcasing the best of his three decades. A must see concert for every fan the tour coincides with the release of his Best Of Album. Marc will be supported by Little Annie accompanied by Baby Dee.

From Soft Cell, the first successful British electro-duo in partnership with Dave Ball, with a string of international hits ('Bedsitter', 'Numbers', 'Torch' ,'Say Hello Wave Goodbye' and, biggest of all, their version of northern soul classic 'Tainted Love', while 'Memorabilia' is cited as the first techno record ever). 10 million-plus worldwide record sales later, Soft Cell are a British icon, influencing several subsequent generations of musicians - from Pulp, The Pet Shop Boys and Suede, to Goldfrapp and onto Antony Hegarty of Antony and The Johnsons fame.

The Interview - a compelling drama about the Holocaust

Dewsbury Town Hall will host the premier performance of 'The Interview', a thought-provoking play depicting a singular account of the Holocaust.

The Interview will be performed from Monday March 29 to Saturday April 3, 7.30pm, with a matinee performance at 3pm on Wednesday March 31.

The play tells the story of Phillip Carter, an enthusiastic reporter, who arranges an interview with a holocaust survivor, Ms Ruben. His enthusiasm and personal crusade to show the world why the holocaust happened, is demolished once he comes face to face with Ms Ruben. The reporter transitions almost immediately from interviewer, to interviewee. Ms Ruben’s firsthand account of life in the holocaust quickly exposes the common naivety the reporter shows, a characteristic shared by the majority of modern people to date.

The play, through emotional flashbacks, cleverly stages the events of Ms Ruben’s life. They demonstrate the happiness, loneliness, and the graphic violence endured by those people effected in Germany and the rest of Europe.The intelligent script explores the reality of human ignorance, and forces the question around humanity’s dark capabilities.

The play promises to send the audience on a rollercoaster of emotions, with theatre, music, dance, and groundbreaking performances on stage to ensure a performance you are not likely to dismiss from your memory. This play by Jayson F A Bartlett is premiering in Dewsbury and touring theatres in the area. Syd Little found fame as one half of the massive comedy double act Little and Large, the recipients of numerous awards for their TV, club and theatre performances throughout the country, including their own BBC TV show which ran for fourteen years. Little and Large are established as one of Britain’s finest double acts and recently celebrated 48 years together. Syd frequently appears on television and radio and recently featured in ITV’s Ant and Dec`s Saturday Night Takeaway, Trust Me I’m A Holiday Rep and Channel Four’s Big Brother Party with Jodie Marsh, as well as BBC Radio2 and Radio 4.

International recording artist and one of Ireland's most successful entertainers, Dana, completes the line-up. Dana has enjoyed outstanding acclaim through best selling recordings, top rating television appearances and major headlining concerts both in Ireland and abroad. She rose to fame after winning the Eurovision Song Contest for Ireland in 1970 with the song ‘All Kinds Of Everything’ which reached Number One in the UK. The wrapping around the Town Hall is now starting to take shape before the refurbishment of the exterior starts soon. Over the coming year we will be carrying out a major £3m building project on the exterior of dewsbury town hall. Work includes:-

-Reroofing the majority of the town hall

-Stonework repairs including cleaning and repointing

-Replacement or repairs to windows-Secondary glazing

-Improved flag flying provision

-Roof Insulation to ensure the building is more energy efficient

Holocaust play to premier at Dewsbury Town Hall

Dewsbury Town Hall will host the premier performance of 'The Interview', a thought-provoking play depicting a singular account of the Holocaust.

To mark Holocaust Memorial Day in January, The Interview will be performed from Monday March 29 to Saturday April 3, 7.30pm, with a matinee performance at 3pm on Wednesday March 31.

The play tells the story of Phillip Carter, an enthusiastic reporter, who arranges an interview with a holocaust survivor, Ms Ruben. His enthusiasm and personal crusade to show the world why the holocaust happened, is demolished once he comes face to face with Ms Ruben. The reporter transitions almost immediately from interviewer, to interviewee. Ms Ruben’s firsthand account of life in the holocaust quickly exposes the common naivety the reporter shows, a characteristic shared by the majority of modern people to date.

The play, through emotional flashbacks, cleverly stages the events of Ms Ruben’s life. They demonstrate the happiness, loneliness, and the graphic violence endured by those people effected in Germany and the rest of Europe.

The intelligent script explores the reality of human ignorance, and forces the question around humanity’s dark capabilities.

The play promises to send the audience on a rollercoaster of emotions, with theatre, music, dance, and groundbreaking performances on stage to ensure a performance you are not likely to dismiss from your memory.

This play by Jayson F A Bartlett is premiering in Dewsbury and touring theatres in the area.

Kirklees has a wonderful music heritage and keen to keep this going with a new generation of concert-goers Kirklees Concert Season are offering £2 tickets for schools and students in groups of 10 or more.

There's a fantastic range of concerts in Huddersfield and Dewsbury Town Halls, lunchtime and evenings, including the forthcoming BBC Philharmonic with Tchaikovsky's Romeo and Juliet taking place on Wednesday February 17 at 7.30pm at Huddersfield Town Hall. Other highlights include the Orchestra of Opera North's 'The Planets' on Wednesday April 28, 7.30pm at Huddersfield Town Hall. With music students from the University of Huddersfield and the winner of the 2009 Leeds International Piano Competition, this is set to be a fantastic concert.

For an extra insight into the music being played concert-goers can join in Talking Music (before the evening concerts) where the Concert Manager and conductor talk to the audience about that evening’s music and the conductor’s approach to it - a wonderful opportunity for students and young people.

Dewsbury Town Hall External Refurbishments Commences Jan 2010

Over the coming year we will be carrying out a major £3m building project on the exterior of dewsbury town hall.

Work includes:-
- Repairs to the roof and stonework
- A new roof for the concert hall
- Replacement or repairs to windows
- Secondary glazing
- Improved flag flying provision
- Roof Insulation

The works will be phased to reduce disruption to hirers and main stage events. During the phasing certain rooms will have to be closed due to the exterior building works. There will be four phases of work continuing until April 2011:-

Phase One - Old Wakefield Road (January to June 2010)
Phase Two - Front of the building (June to August 2010)
Phase Three - Above the Concert Hall (July - November 2010)
Phase Four - Town Hall Way (November 2010 - April 2011)

Cancellation of the Black Dyke Concert

Due to the adverse weather conditions on Sunday 20th December, we had to make the difficult decision of cancelling the Black Dyke Band’s Christmas Concert at Huddersfield Town Hall.

Many of our staff, customers and also some performers were unable to get to the venue due to heavy snowfall in the Huddersfield area. I appreciate this has caused disappointment for all, but the safety of our customers, performers and staff is always uppermost.

Over the past few days we have been working closely with the band to try and re arrange the concert. Unfortunately, we have not been able to find a date when both band and venue are mutually available. Our sincere apologies that therefore, we will not be able to go ahead with this popular event this year.

Refunds will be available from Tuesday 5th January 2010 and can be made by post or preferably in person.

As the news was announced that ABBA will finally join the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in the United States, tickets went on sale for BJÖRN AGAIN for Wednesday 10 March 2010 at Huddersfield Town Hall.

For a great night out BJÖRN AGAIN are hard to beat. With their authentic recreation of this legendary group they're sure to get everyone on their feet singing along to classics such as Mamma Mia, Dancing Queen, Waterloo and many, many more hits.

Extra tickets have been released for these two festive concerts featuring Brian Kay who returns as conductor and presenter, Hepworth Band and the Australian soprano soloist Martene Grimson.

There’s a good mix of well-loved favourites and some new pieces - notably two lovely items by John Rutter: ‘Esta noche’ (This night), a traditional Spanish carol - sung in Spanish - and his own ‘I wish you Christmas’.

The Hepworth band are new guests for The Choral, and they’re bringing a fresh selection of seasonal tunes - including some more John Rutter arrangements just for the band. Darius Battiwalla is at the organ and piano.

Martene Grimson is singing some items with the choir - including Harold Darke’s beautiful setting of ‘In the bleak midwinter’ - and her own solo contributions include ‘The Holy City’ and ‘The Star of Bethlehem’, both by Stephen Adams, and two well-known Handel arias.

Dewsbury Town Hall is to star in a new drama called Spanish Flu - The Forgotten Fallen.

Wednesday 5th August @ 9pm on BBC4

Over the past few months the Town Halls management team have been working closely with Screen Yorkshire and Hardy Pictures to secure this filming at Dewsbury Town Hall.

The whole building was used for a ten day period and was overrun with more than 70 cast and crew!

Set against the background of the Armistice in November 1918, as millions of exhausted soldiers return home from the Great War, the film tells the little known story of Dr James Niven (Bill Paterson), Manchester's Medical Officer of Health for 30 years, and his heroic efforts to combat a second wave of fatal influenza as it spreads across the city of Manchester and the UK.

Dr Niven has built his career protecting the welfare of Manchester's most vulnerable people, from the factory workers to the slum dwellers. But, just as Manchester's fighting heroes are returning home and crowds of men, women and children gather to celebrate the end of the Great War, Niven realises that it will take all of his energy and expertise to limit the spread of this mysterious infection.

Facing resistance from both the city and his fellow medical officials, Dr Niven, statistician Ernest Dunks (Mark Gatiss) and their secretary Peggy Lytton (Charlotte Riley) struggle to understand the evolving virus; to communicate the urgent need for action to the establishment and the media; and to pull together scarce resources to alleviate its impact on the poorest in society.
And as they battle against complacency, inertia and red tape, the gravity of the unfolding crisis hits home when Peggy's family start to succumb to the virus.

Inspired by Dr Niven's own accounts and documented facts, the film pays a rare tribute to the estimated 70 million forgotten fallen who died from Spanish influenza across the world.
Dr Niven's heroism continues to resonate today with many of his conclusions, instructions and discoveries echoed by modern advice and procedures for pandemic flu.

Refurbishment work starts today at Huddersfield Town Hall and also Batley Town Hall

We are delighted to announce that refurbishment work at Huddersfield Town Hall and Batley Town Hall has commenced today.

HUDDERSFIELD TOWN HALL
This summer Huddersfield Town Hall has £1m allocated to the refurbishment of meeting rooms 1, 2 and 3 plus the corridors outside these areas. Other areas of redecoration include the staircase and the corridor leading to the Council Chamber and Reception Room.

Also the ornate ceilings in the main concert hall will undergo detailed inspections before further phases of refurbishment go ahead.

From late September 2009 the meeting rooms will be offering 21st Century comfort, style and technology in beautiful Victorian surroundings.

BATLEY TOWN HALL
The scaffolding is will start to go up later this week at Batley Town Hall before a full external refurbishment of the building this summer and autumn.

The Yorkshire premiere of The Likes of Us at Cleckheaton Town Hall

Great Horton Theatre Company are leaving the Alhambra Theatre after nearly 50 years - but they are coming to Kirklees for the first time.

The good news is that one of the reasons for them doing so is their successful application to perform the Yorkshire premiere of the Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice musical 'The Likes of Us' at Cleckheaton Town Hall.So, the oldest amateur musical society (established over 100 years) in Bradford is going to Kirklees for the first time!'

The Likes of Us' was written in the 60s, but was never performed on stage other than a recorded part-production at Lloyd Webber’s Sydmonton Festival in 2005. It has been released by The Really Useful Group (Lord Lloyd Webber's company) for selected 2009 amateur productions, prior to a West End staging in the next couple of years.

Having successfully secured the premiere for Yorkshire Great Horton Theatre Company, the production of six performances will take place from Tuesday June 9. The Likes Of Us contains 21 fully orchestrated numbers and tells the story of the life of Dr Thomas Barnardo, a man who was evangelical, entrepreneurial and philanthropic, and whose crusade to rescue children living on the streets became world renowned. Described as “a musical that has existed for 40 years hidden away from view”

The Likes of Us is Oliveresque in style and is best known for the much-quoted Tim Rice lyric: “Here I have a lovely parrot sound in wind and limb I can guarantee that there is nothing wrong with him.”

Why Cleckheaton Town Hall? Apart from the fact that it is an excellent venue, Great Horton is a south Bradford society and the measured distance from their rehearsal rooms (which are only 3 minutes drive from the M606) to Cleckheaton Town Hall is only four miles!
